Lightstalkers Worldwide Discovery, Outback Australia – The Kimberley
Gibb River Road and The Kimberley Western Australia
Destination summary
You’re invited to register your interest for one of just 3 guests touring and photographing this stunning part of outback Australia. The Kimberley, the last frontier in the far north of Western Australia.
The Australian outback is a special place. The Kimberley region is a sparsely populated part of of Western Australia, around 3 times the size of England. It borders the Northern Territory to the east and the Indian Ocean to the west.
You’ll be starting off in the former Pearling town of Broome in Western Australia’s far north exploring and then photographing the surrounding outback gems by four wheel drive along the legendary Gibb River Road, fording rivers and navigating outback red dirt roads. Highlights of this region, include Bells Gorge, Galven’s Gorge and Manning Gorge plus all the wild flora and fauna along the way. To the east of the Gibb the natural features around the Cockburn Range, Emma Gorge, El Questro station and the Pentecost River will offer a rich array of subject matter.
The Details
From Broome we’ll travel east via the Gibb River road , an iconic outback journey with two overnight camps under the stars. From there we reach Home Valley Station, a working cattle station near the magical Pentecost River . You’ll have two comfortable nights in lodge accommodation with good food and refreshments as we take to the dirt roads to explore and photograph locations around El Questro The Pentecost River and Emma Gorge including the dramatic waterfall at Emma.
From El Questro we’ll head into Kununurra town and restock supplies and everything we need for Purnululu NP.
Back on the main highway, further south we take to the rough tracks again out to World Heritage listed Purnululu National Park and its famous beehive domes. Your base here deep in the park will be a 3 night wild bushcamp* with some facilities close to the main locations.
These amazing and unusual beehive shaped domes will feature during dawn and dusk and there’s an option to photograph these from the air by helicopter at dawn, an amazing spectacle.
Other nearby highlights include Piccaninny Creek, Cathedral Gorge, Echidna Chasm and Mini Palms Gorge.
From here we’ll make our way west by sealed road, breaking for the night in Fitzroy Crossing, capturing some dusk light in magnificent Geikie Gorge and the Fitzroy River. Our base will be the comfortable Fitzroy motor inn.
After Fitzroy we end up back in Broome where we’ll photograph expansive Cable Beach. At dusk a caravan of camels promenade the beach making an iconic but simple and evocative image as do the vivid rocks and seascapes around Gantheaume Point.
After resting in Broome for a night and a colourful session on Cable Beach you’ll travel north up the Dampier Peninsula to the remote and colourful Cape Leveque and Cygnet Bay. A coastal seascape wilderness of vivid hues, white sand and warm turquoise waters and a working Pearl farm. Plenty opportunities for vivid seascapes and hopefully an insight into the history of Pearling in the region. After two nights you’ll make your way back to Broome where the trip will end.
You may want to extend your stay in beautiful Broome or travel to Perth or another Australian destination.
