Capture Venice, Italy workshop

Destination summary

There is nowhere quite like Venice. In November the days are shorter and the streets get quieter. Most tourists never really get to see the real Venice but on this workshop you’ll be escaping some of the usual busier  parts so you’ll have more time to look, savour and let the land in the lagoon permeate your senses.

Every building, street and waterway has a photo opportunity waiting and I’ve hand picked a series of varied locations that will do this amazing part of the world justice.

Being creative is important, so we’ll take time to choose how we shoot each  dawn and dusk location.  As the city awakens and life takes to the waterways we’ll be there to witness and photograph it all.

There are also two planned walks that you’ll navigate with me as your guide. Seeing Venetian life reflected in the canals and history etched into weathered pastel walls and walkways of this unique place.

Of course we’ll photograph the classic locations from San Marco square and along the Riva  as well as the classic views around the grand canal. But we’ll also visit San Giorgio Maggiore and the colourful houses of Burano Island and the quieter parts around Cannaregio, San Croce and the Giudecca.

There really is an image around every corner and we’ll explore the everyday life and moods of this special city  in between our featured dusk and dawn sessions.

If you’ve never been to or photographed Venice then it should definitely be on your photography “to do” list.

What to expect

This photo adventure includes an initial practical tutorial on basic shooting skills, use of camera gear and equipment on location on the first day.  This includes camera workflow, shooting in manual mode and reading histograms.

A photo adventure’s  main objective is guiding you to the best locations at the right time with suggestions on types of shot, general settings and composition advice. Participants should be familiar in the use of their cameras to get the best out of the locations, however help is always on hand  and advice freely given.

Participants will be invited to share 6 of their  final images  with Glen and their fellow participants for comment after the trip via a secure online link.

Soft light creates mood but it will be cooler in November (and quieter) with the occasional shower at this time of year. This can add to the atmosphere of our images at all times of the day. Light rain jackets and a fleece top might be a good idea.

Locations and fitness.

Venice is pretty flat, so its great for walking which we will be doing plenty of over the period. We’ll be exploring on foot so you’ll needn’t to be comfortable walking a few kilometres during the walkabout sessions. We’ll also be hopping on and off the vaporetta (water bus)  to get ourselves between some locations.  There will be time for coffee and refreshment breaks but make sure your comfortable walking with what you carry in your camera bag.

All ages above 18 years are welcome but a reasonable level of fitness and mobility is required, regardless of age in order to fully participate and appreciate a Lightstalker’s photo adventure or workshop.  If you have any doubts of your suitability for a specific trip please contact Glen directly.

Directions – getting to the hotel* from the airport.

From Treviso airport: Take the ATVO bus from the airport to Piazzale Roma. Take the No 1 or No 2 Vaporetto water bus down the Grand Canal for about 1/2 hour.

The Vaporetto stop to get off is San Marco Vallaresso on the left bank. Alight here and walk immediately up Calle Vallaresso, when you get to the end of the street (130 meters ) you will have two options – turn right and walk a short distance to the end  – in front of you are the buildings at the west side of St Marcs Square – cut through one of the the undercover passages / arcades ( there are a couple ) and you’ll be in the main square – walk across it diagonally to the north side as per the map, there is a lane way that crosses a small canal – continue for 70 metres –   The Hotel San Gallo is on your right, you will see the sign, go inside and up the stairs – the doorway to the Hotel is on the first floor. All up it’s a 5 minute walk from the Vaporetto stop.

From Marco Polo airport:  There are four possibilities (1) private watertaxi from the airport to as close as possible to your hotel. These can be booked at the two desks in the Arrivals Hall and will cost  c.€100 -129 for the whole launch, not per passenger. (2) a shared water taxi for c. €25 per person (see Venice link shared transfer) (3) Alilaguna ferry from the airport to a number of places in Venice (see  for €15 per adult. (4) ATVO coach or ACTV bus or land taxi to Piazzale Roma. Same directions apply as above from here to the Hotel. *You’ll be notified if the venue is changed.

I will send a map showing the short walking route from the San Marco Vallaresso  stop to the hotel once booked. If your not confident with directions, I may be able to meet you at the Piazzale Roma and guide you. Don’t panic, everyone gets lost in Venice at some point.

"This was such a sociable, varied and absorbing workshop. We were immersed in Venetian atmosphere and colour, mostly led away from the crowds along quieter canal ways and passageways. Glen showed us a Venice of water and light which beguiled the senses and created a myriad opportunities for beautiful photographs. A real treat!" Jane Lambert - UK
