DOLOMITES, ITALY SEPTEMBER 2018 – Sold Out

Destination summary

This Dolomites photo adventure focuses on several of the most dramatic mountains and passes in the Dolomites. It features stunning  Alpine scenery captured at  dusk and dawn  in beautiful mountain light.

During this trip you’ll be exploring and photographing from the high passes and plateaus that are surrounded by the soaring peaks and pinnacles of the Trentino Alto Adige and Veneto regions of the Dolomites ranges.

A designated UNESCO World Heritage area, you’ll be focusing on the  Sesto (Tre Cime), Sella, and Pale (Pale Di San Martino) groups.   Along with the massif of Marmolada and Pelmo, these are some of the most dramatic and iconic peaks of the Dolomites.

Famous for their rosy pink glow (Enrosadira) we’ll be in the best locations, ready to capture the soaring peaks at dawn and dusk. During the day  you’ll traverse the many high passes seeking out dramatic and evocative compositions of the jagged mountains and valleys below.

From our base a little further to the west you’ll venture onto the Alpe di Siusi Europe’s biggest alpine plateau, vast meadows  dotted with wooden huts overlooked by magnificent Mt Sciliar.

Further north you’ll finally travel into the incredibly scenic Valle di Funes with its iconic chapel at the foot of the Odle range.  Shaped and formed by natural elements over time these incredibly dramatic mountains and valleys are all easily accessible by road and cable cars* and up to the higher tops at certain times of the year.

What to expect

Photo Adventure

This photo adventure includes an initial practical tutorial on basic shooting skills, use of camera gear and equipment on location.  This includes camera workflow, shooting in manual mode and reading histograms if required.

A photo adventure’s  main objective is guiding you to the best locations at the right time with suggestions on types of shot, general settings and composition advice. Participants should be familiar in the use of their cameras to get the best out of the locations, however help is always on hand  and advice freely given.

Participants will be invited to share 6 of their  final images  with Glen and their fellow participants for comment after the trip via a secure online link.

Weather

Perfect for  early Autumn adventures. The Dolomites receive more sunshine hours than their Alpine cousins and are still pleasantly warm. Hikers and climbers roam the mountains at this time of year but you still have to come prepared for unseasonal changes. Light warm layers, gloves and hats for those early sessions at altitude which can be over 2000 meters. Waterproof and windproof jackets are also a must. Comfortable boots or hiking shoes with good grip.

Locations

Most of the photo locations will be around mountain passes ( passo ) which we will navigate and access in our 9 seater van. We may go for short walks to explore the surrounding areas and vary compositions but nothing extreme. Most passes have a Refugio ( small hotel ) or restaurants and cafes that have toilets and refreshments. We may use these for lunch stops too. Bring cash in euros as they don’t always take cards.

The roads can be steep and very windy with hairpin bends so if you suffer from travel sickness, maybe bring something to counter this. A cable car ride to the Cinque Torre is also planned but this is optional and little effort is required apart from a head for heights on the way up. * Cable cars are subject to weather and conditions.

Fitness

All ages above 18 years are welcome but a reasonable level of fitness and mobility is required, regardless of age in order to fully participate and appreciate a Lightstalker’s photo adventure or workshop.  Some walking on short trails will be required but there are no overly long uphill hikes. A cable car ride to the Cinque Torre is also part of the interary and some short walks are at the summit. If you have any doubts of your suitability for a specific trip please contact Glen directly.
